Elizabeth Podnieks
Biography:
Dr. Elizabeth Podnieks has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toronto, a master of Environmental Science from York University, Toronto and a Doctor of Education in Sociology from the University of Toronto. She is currently a professor at Ryerson University's School of Nursing in Toronto. She is also the founder and chair of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a leading member of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the catalyst for both the Canadian and Ontario networks for the prevention of elder abuse. How did she become involved:
She is a pioneer in elder abuse work in faith communities, and raising awareness of elder abuse among childer and adolescents. In 1991, she conducted the "National Survey on Abuse of the Elderly in Canada", which became a significant transition step to bring up the concern and awareness on elder abuse in Canada.
